Salou Salou!

"Only in spontaneity can we be who we truly are." - John McLaughlin

We rang in the New Year as many others did, watching the clock, cheer ‘sing to midnight and making plans for 2024.

Two days later we were on a plane!

2024 is about spontaneous trips! (they are always the best ones)

Sunrise from the clouds!

PortAventura World - Theme and leisure park

PortAventura World is a popular theme park destination for entertainment located in Salou, Spain. The theme park itself is divided into different themed areas, each offering a unique experience, from the exhilarating roller coasters to family-friendly attractions. Additionally, the resort features a wide array of shows & street performances that are absolutely not to be missed! It was my first time to visit and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by how well put together this place was. In comparison to Disney Land, this park offers a more laid back, local vibe that isn’t overly pricey or exhausting to get your head around.

Tip: Wear comfortable flat shoes and bring a light rain jacket (for the water rides not the rain!) I ended up buying one at the gift shop but it was so reasonably priced it was an easy purchase!

Where to Stay?

Hotel Colorado Creek – PortAventura World’s 4-star hotel

We stayed on site and at first, a little apprehensive, but I was blown away with the beautiful architecture and well designed grounds. They really go all in on the theme of the “country vibe” at this hotel and I would go back in a heart beat. It was so relaxed, coming to the end of the season and there was a real “adult only” vibe around, even for a themepark! It did not feel like we were in Spain at all!

Tip: With the deal we purchased online (follow link provided) we had unlimited access to the park & one day access to Ferrari Land, just remember that you need to bring your themepark card with you at all times to swipe in and out of the parks. You can also use it in every shop/food stand/restaurant in either park to gather points with your purchase (just make sure you hand it to them before you pay) We ended up getting a huge discount on our gift shopping on the final day!

Top Tip: Rent a car from the airport (easy 10 min drive to Salou beach/centre for the evening time if you need a breakaway or want to hit the shops!

We rented one on arrival with no pre-booking and it was a simple process at Barcelona airport.

What Else Is There To Do?

Don’t forget to visit Salou while you are there…

Salou is a charming little coastal town located in the Catalonia region of Spain. It is known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and family-friendly attractions, Salou offers something for every type of traveller. The picturesque palm-lined promenade, Passeig Jaume I, is perfect for leisurely strolls and people-watching, and of course a spot of shopping if so inclined!

Now we were lucky because we got to induldge in a little extended Christmas. We happend to be in Salou for the 6th of January, Spain. On this day the Epiphany is celebrated, known as "El Día de Reyes" or Three Kings' Day. This festive holiday marks the culmination of the Christmas season, with the arrival of the Three Wise Men who brought gifts to the infant Jesus. In Spain, the day is filled with colourful parades, with the Three Kings, or "Los Reyes Magos," tossing sweets and small gifts to children lining the streets. Families gather for special meals and exchange presents, and it is traditional to eat a Roscón de Reyes, a ring-shaped sweet bread adorned with candied fruits, symbolizing the crowns worn by the Three Kings. It is a joyous and meaningful occasion, deeply rooted in Spanish culture and religious tradition. It was absolute luck that we got to attend the parades, just ‘right place right time’ and it was definitely worth it.
